Making a Bird Perch for your birds

I like a nice sensible perch that is well attached for the fact that they are safe and look much neater.

I wasnt prepared to pay the prices the shops sell them at so I made my own. No doubt many people will have already done this, but for those who havent, give it ago.

    What you need:

    Branches of your desired length/thickness
Saw or something to cut them with
    Hanger Bolts
    Washers to fit the bolts
Wing Nuts to fit the bolts

Total cost : about 1 euro for 6 perches!

** First thing is measure up how long you want your perch. One you measured it, mark the length onto the branch you wish to turn into a perch. (MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE!)

** Cut the ends of the branch and keep them as straight/flat as possible so the perch will sit flush with the cage for a neater, tighter fit. I used a Jig Saw to cut mine, quick, easy and straight. You can use anything you want, just try get it a flush cut.

** Next step depends what kind of hanger bolts you have. I used an electric drill with a star headed screw driver piece in and drove the hanger bolts into the center of each end of the branch/perch. You can use a normal screw driver if you dont have a drill/electric screwy.

** Thats it! Add a washer before and after the actual cage then secure with a wing nut. Just like you see in the shops, but cost a fraction of the price, even free if you already have the bolts, washer and nuts!

Here's some pics of mine I made a while back.

This is a hanger bolt for those who don't know:

We have a huge maple tree in back. My husband brought in a nice branch and i scrubbed it up and put it in a 200 degree oven for 2 hours and then he put te anchor bolt in and the birds love it.
